       This project belongs to key task “Vulnerability and adaptability of the biosphere under the influence of global change” which is included in the “National Basic Research Program of Global Change Study in China”. In this project, the vulnerability and adaptability of major terrestrial ecosystems in China (including forest, grassland, wetland and farmland ecosystems) under the influence of global change would be studied. The research would provide scientific and technological support for national sustainable economic and social developments
       This project is designed under the general framework of sustainability science. Considering the sensitive response of mid-high latitude and high altitude ecosystems (forest, grassland, wetland and cropland) to climate change, we plan to conduct the research from five aspects: (1) detecting sensitivity indices with universal significance and their key climate factors for terrestrial ecosystems to respond to climate change from plant/crop individual level to ecosystem level and vegetation/cultivation zone level; (2) establishing index system for evaluating vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in China; (3)developing a process-based ecosystem model coupling structure and function for evaluating ecosystem vulnerability; (4) constructing adaptive technology system for vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems in China under the influence of global change; and (5) performing technological demonstration in typical and vulnerable ecosystems. In terms of this study; the scientific basis for vulnerability evaluation and adaptivity administration would be formed, and a sustainable development paradigm of the adaptation of China’s terrestrial ecosystems to climate change would be developed . 
      The key scientific issues of this project include: (1) response and regulation mechanisms of vulnerability and adaptability of terrestrial ecosystems at different temporal and spatial scales; (2) evaluation methodology and adaptive technology for the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems.

The contents of this project include: (1) study on changes of structure and function in typical terrestrial ecosystems in the regions sensitive to climate change; (2) index system and model study for evaluating vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in China; (3) the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in China and its adaptive level under future climate change scenarios; (4) technology system study on adaptivity in typical and vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems.

 Expected goals includes: (1) to clarify vulnerability, adaptability and their regulation mechanisms of terrestrial ecosystems in China; (2) to construct an index system for evaluating vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in China and to develop a process-based model coupling ecosystem structure and function; (3) to establish adaptive technology system for vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems in China to global change, to declare 3 - 5 adaptation technology national patents and to build 3 - 5 technology demonstration bases in typical and vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems; (4) to publish about 150 papers including about 60 papers of international high-level SCI papers, two monographs and 3 - 5 policy advisory proposals; and (5) to organize a research group on vulnerability evaluation of terrestrial ecosystems under the influence of global change with international scientific standards.

        This project consists of 4 subjects, including: (1) vulnerability and its evaluation index for natural terrestrial ecosystems under the influence of global change; (2) vulnerability and evaluation index for major crop under the influence of global change; (3) vulnerability and adaptability of terrestrial ecosystems and their responses to future climate change; (4) adaptive technology system study for typical and vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems.
        The proposed budget for this project is about 30 million Chinese yuan.
